This is a small painting of a large, solid Irish country farmhouse completed for the paintfor.me website.
Once again I started by sketching the house out in charcoal before then carefully adding layers of oil over the initial drawing. I hummed and haawed over whether to retain the satellite dish on the side, but decided to keep it as it’s a part of the look of the house now, but obviously for a house portrait commission that is the type of thing I discuss with you the commissioner.
I retained the barn in the background on the left in order to balance out the attached garage space on the right compositionally and painted the potted plants and trees at the front of the house in a loose impressionistic style as a contrast to the blocky straight lines of the house and windows.
