The House with Stained Glass Window

The finished painting

This is an original house portrait painted in oils and acrylic which I completed for someone who leaves near Manchester in the UK as a paintforme house portrait commission.

The client sent me a number of photos including a close up of the specially commissioned stained glass panel she had in her front door which she particularly wanted to be included in detail.

From inside the house you could see the light streaming through the glass, but from outside it was shadowed. So I painted the glass as seen from inside, but had to of course reverse it, so that it looked right.

I primarily paint in oils, but for these house portraits with all their straight lines and brick details I find that acrylic works better for me as a quick-drying paint. It allows me to paint layers of paint and then dry them with a hair-dryer so that I can continue working on the next layer. For this painting I sketched out the painting using charcoal and then used acrylics to paint over this initial drawing and then added a final layer in oils.
